Updated: Dec 15, 2020

What Is the hype around cruelty free & vegan makeup you may ask?

Why should I look for makeup that is both cruelty free and/or vegan?

Which makeup brands are vegan? Which makeup brands are cruelty free?

Which makeup brands don’t test on animals?

These are all really important questions that you should ask when looking for new products or brands to purchase from.

Let’s begin by dissecting these questions.

What does it mean for a product to be cruelty free?

Cruelty-free makeup is a category of makeup that has not been tested on animals. However, it is important to note that there are still many brands today that categorizes themselves as cruelty-free yet they still use and include raw materials in their products that have been tested on animals.

Even if you are not an animal activists, we should all be aware and concerned for what goes on behind closed doors in the many animal testing labs.

What does it mean for a product to be vegan?

Vegan makeup means a product does not contain any animal products or animal-derived ingredients (disturbing right?). Vegan makeup refers to the ingredients used in the products.

With that being said, just because a product is cruelty-free, does not mean the product is vegan and vice-versa. Unfortunately, items that are tested on animals can claim to be vegan.

Unfortunately a company can claim anything on their labels, so it is important for us to do our own research when making a purchase. You can do so by reading the list of ingredients carefully.

Which brands are Cruelty Free and Vegan?

A great place to reference is Logical Harmony’s Brand List, which is often updated to reflect companies that offer cruelty free and vegan options.

I think it is also important to note that just because a brand is vegan & cruelty free does not mean the ingredients used in the products are clean, natural, green or safe. You always want to go through the list of ingredients to make sure that there are no toxic chemicals being used.
